Elon Musk is the Co-founder at PayPal, Tesla Motors & the founder at SpaceX. He’s also the one who came up with the concept of SolarCity. As if these achievements were simply not enough. Elon is secretly working on a project that would allow long distance commute to occur in a very short time (compared to existing modes of transportation). He calls it the hyperloop and wouldn’t exactly say what the technology is and/or how it would work. But I suspect it would be something magnetic levitation of a nature. A subject that I have briefly blogged about in the past here & here
Elon is knee-deep on his path towards disrupting status quo. He’s disrupting traditions and industries that have changed very little for decades and perhaps even an entire century ( automobile industry). The institutions that Elon has launched will radically change our world and definitely for the better. Specially if you extrapolate the enormous positive benefits that we are going to reap as a species. Tesla Motors, hyperloop & projects like Solarcity will act as a catalyst when it comes to our switch towards a cleaner/greener form of living. Up until now, space faring has required hundreds of billions worth of tax payers money. Believe it or not, but since the 60′s, very little innovation has gone into how rockets are propelled into space. That’s really where the bulk of NASA’s budget would go. SpaceX (Elon’s company) has made the reality of sending a rocket to space and the cost is just a mere 7 million dollars.
Remarkable achievement really. Truly stellar!
Elon has definitely setup some audacious goals for himself. For humans to become a truly space faring species is one of these goals. Millions have dreamt of this, but this man can actually make it happen. If Elon Musk keeps going at this rate, we will land a team on Mars within 8 years.
What an inspirational figure! Elon is a testament to the fact that if we can imagine it, then we can build it. And that nothing is impossible.
Also, don’t forget. Only in the United States. This is why I am a big proponent of why, the United States has a tremendous potential for influencing positive global change. It’s the perfect climate, the availability of capital, rock solid institutions that promote innovation. Also not to forget the culture of failing early & often, out of which many new breakthroughs emerge. It’s the perfect hotbed that can and does allow a potential like Elon to thrive and thrive really well. Just need to focus more on what’s working and innovation is definitely one of those areas that has been working all this time. And if we are smart about it, then we can usher a new era of global co-operations that will focus on replicating this culture of innovation in other countries. Think about the economic benefits (friendly approach encouraging trade). That is, if global progress wasn’t incentive enough. Eventually the co-operation will also encourage exporting the cultural values of a society and global social reform. Sorry, got side tracked!
Coming back to the subject and to end this blog-post (It’s just the beginning). Here is some more information on Elon Musk. The interview by Kevin Rose is really fascinating. So is the Risk Taker profile by BloomBerg TV (link below)
